Our History

"Mid-City” comes from the geographical name for the Mid-City Plateau above Mission Valley.

Our history begins in the 1980s, when Mid-City CAN was first established as Mid-City for Youth and was focused on Youth Development. The first grant was "SB 1741," which focused on integration of services for youth development- this is how SAY became the fiscal agent of Mid-City CAN and the collaborative hired its first staff.

In the 1990s, the collaborative became Mid-City CAN, beggining to focus on broader issues and venture in to resident organizing.

In 2009, Mid-City CAN entered into a 10-year partnership with The California Endowment in the Building Healthy Communities Initiative with the goal of improving community health in City Heights.

In 2014, Mid-City CAN transitioned to the fiscal sponsorship of Mission Edge San Diego.

Mid-City CAN recently fine-tuned its organizing and advocacy model and has multiple campaign wins, including but not limited to:

  • 100% TDAP vaccination in City Heights Schools
  • Healthy Halal Chicken Lunches
  • Skate Park
  • Skate Plaza
  • Restorative Justice alternative to incarceration
  • No-cost Youth Bus Pass
