Angeli H. is just one example of bravery in City Heights

Mark Tran

Did you hear that Youth Community Organizer Mark Tran is attending the launch of the Born This Way Foundation at Harvard? Lady Gaga wants to inspire bravery and empower youth with her foundation. Mark sees bravery happening all over City Heights:

For another City Heights youth, bravery comes in the form of parents who risk being deported just for the opportunity to earn an honest wage to provide for their families. With over 85,000 people living in City Heights, more than 30 languages spoken in our local schools, and a person’s identity closely associated with the words immigrant, refugee, war-torn, survival and resettlement. City Heights has become a haven for many people looking to work towards a better life not only for themselves, but for their children.

A resident of City Heights and in her first year at City College, Angeli H. sees undocumented immigrants as the bravest individuals in our community.

“Some people who are undocumented, know that if they get caught, they’ll get deported and they’ll have nothing,” Angeli said.

Even with these obstacles, Angeli admires this group of City Height’s residents because, she said “They will still go out and work to provide for their family, even though they know that if they get caught. They’ll lose everything.”

Angeli is motivated by the actions of these brave individuals, who are fathers, mothers, aunts, uncles, grandparents, because they are in a tough situation. It’s a situation that she can relate to.

She said it motivates her and makes her realize that she “should be working harder, because they have it hard, and even when they have to [work] hard, they’re still trying.”

This perspective has really helped her to understand and be grateful for what she has.

Angeli is the first member of her family to graduate from high school and she is now working towards a college degree. She sees how some of her peers are going to college to have fun and meet people, and not taking advantage of opportunity given to them to go to school. Undeterred, she is focused on completing her education, which will ultimately help her land a stable and well-paying job. This will in turn, inevitably, put her in a position to help her family, and repay the sacrifices made by her parents, so that together, they can realize the American Dream.

Bravery comes in many different shapes and sizes.
