Youth Council video wins an international award

In June, Marcos Olascoaga told the story of an SUV hitting him while he was skateboarding in City Heights and how it changed his life.

“I was riding down the sidewalk, and this guy was coming out of a driveway,” he said. “He hit me hard on my left hip, and it just flew me on to the street and the sidewalk.”

He went to the hospital, but made a full recovery. However, Olascoaga was inspired by that experience to campaign for a safe place to exercise in City Heights with the Mid-City CAN youth council. Mid-City CAN wanted people to hear his story.

With the help of Matthew Funke, a freelance video editor, Mid-City CAN created a video in June that told Olascoaga’s story as part of the work that it is doing in City Heights. On Nov. 1, that video received a MarCom award, a marketing and communications creative competition with participants from some of the most successful communication firms in the world. The MarCom awards receive approximately 6,000 entries a year – many from media conglomerates and Fortune 50 companies.

“I think the MarCom award is pretty cool, because it kind of shows what our message is -- why we did the video,” Olascoaga said. “So people saw that it was really important, worthy of an award.”

That video ran 40 times on KPBS between July and September. A Spanish language version of the video ran on V-Me, KPBS’ Spanish-language station, 34 times during those months.

That exposure definitely helped advance the skatepark campaign, Olascoaga said.

“I feel like it is going faster -- the whole skatepark in City Heights campaign is a bigger movement now,” he said. “It is almost over a year now since we started the skatepark campaign. Now I feel like, it's the time to have it ready, to get it done -- to see it in the streets instead of just on paper.”
