Two Mid-City CAN youth council members and a youth community organizer traveled to the Bay Area in mid-January to begin the first stage of an event designed to connect youth in the Building Healthy Communities sites and multiply their efforts.

Youth Council members Angel Quintero and Grecia Lopez traveled to Oakland with Mark Tran, youth community organizer, Jan. 21-23 to the Regional Convening Planning Groups workshop as part of the BHC Youth Convenings initiative.

Tran said the event had three major goals: to introduce the youth to one-another, to plan for the larger youth convening in June and for adults to share best practices.

Angel said he appreciated the chance for his voice to be heard.

"At times youth feel shutdown by adults when they take the spotlight" he said.

Besides planning for the summer event, Tran said it was also a chance for the youth council members to experience personal growth. It was the first time that

both youth council members visited the Bay Area.

"It was really fulfilling," Tran said. "I nudged them to engage with other youth."

By Sunday, Tran said, Grecia and Angel had bonded with their roommates and were hanging out together.

"I liked it," Angel said. "I want to experience more."
