"Dream Big" is part of the motto at Central Elementary School in City Heights, and the more than 50 students in the 100 Mile Club take that directive very seriously. Eleven members of the 100 Mile Club were recognized at a medal ceremony on July 7 for running or walking at least 100 miles this past school year, with one student reaching an amazing 254 miles. Perhaps more surprising, the student's mother ended up logging 214 miles herself while volunteering for the Club.

Last fall, parent Jos Ramos collaborated with the Central Health & Wellness Council to apply for and win a start-up Acceleration Grant from Michelle Obama's Let's Move! initiative.

As head coach of the 100 Mile Club, Ramos led a group of dedicated parent volunteers and students in before-school running and walking five days a week, setting those students up for a lifetime of fitness and academic success each school day.

In May, Ramos coordinated the first "Central Run" to introduce even more students, parents and community members to the joy of doing physical activity together. Principal Liz Duvall gave a big "thumbs up" for the group to continue, so Coach Ramos is seeking funding to keep the students of the 100 Mile running next school year.
