New Mid-City CAN employee studies impacts of advocacy

Mid-City Community Advocacy Network has added a new employee whose work focuses on evaluating the work that it does.

The group hired Ami Jones to fill the role of evaluation specialist in late December. She said part of her new job was changing her thinking.

"I always think of, when I hear the words 'health care,' it involves medicine, surgery, diagnoses and progress," she said. "Not something like 'I was in jail and I can't rehab myself back into society.' "

She has learned that much of Mid-City CAN's work does look at environmental health issues, as part of the Building Healthy Communities Initiative. The Initiative is a 10 year, $1 billion effort to change the way that health happens in 14 communities throughout California, including City Heights.

"The whole idea of building better communities, having a health-care initiative, that was really important to me," she said. "To work with different facets and socio-economic groups."

Jones' background includes working with electronic medical records and volunteering at City Heights organizations.

Her work will focus on Health Impact Assessments, which examine how public health is affected by projects and policies that may not traditionally be considered health-related.

"It is more about social norms, having good food available, feeling safe, with less noise pollution and things that affect your whole body anyway," she said. "If you don't have a good place to sleep, good food, a place to walk or be active, you are not going to have a healthy outcome."
