Manuel Pastor, an advisory committee member for The California Endowment, as well as an author and professor, spoke at the University of San Diego's Seventh Annual Nonprofit Governance Symposium on Jan. 7, but was kind enough to take a few hours out of his busy schedule the night before to have dinner with the Mid-City CAN Coordinating Council. The Professor of Geography and American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California discussed a wide-range of topics, including why The California Endowment wanted Mid-City CAN to be part of its Building Healthy Communities Initiative and how social justice goals can include economic development.
